Growing up in California, Coach Chad Phillips was inspired by his father, Jim Phillips, who coached high school baseball and football. Watching his father model leadership, discipline, and mentorship shaped Coach Phillips’ desire to guide young athletes. After playing basketball at Canyon High School under Coach Greg Hayes, he realized that basketball was the sport he wanted to dedicate his life to.
Coach Phillips began his coaching career in the summer of 1995, serving as the Head Freshman Coach at Canyon High School. That early experience affirmed his passion for teaching and coaching. After completing his Bachelor’s Degree at Sonoma State University, he returned to Canyon in 1999 to teach and coach at the high school level.
In 2000, at just 23 years old, Coach Phillips was named the Head Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach at Canyon High School—his alma mater. Over the next twelve seasons (2000–2012), the program became known for its strong work ethic, discipline, and consistent postseason presence, highlighted by three Foothill League Championships, multiple twenty-win seasons, and twelve straight playoff appearances.
In 2014, he took over the Varsity Boys’ Basketball Program at Valencia High School. His teams at Valencia were recognized for their defense, toughness, and competitive consistency. In his first season, the Vikings captured the Foothill League Title, and in 2015–16, the program made a memorable run to the CIF Division Playoff Elite Eight, defeating two defending state champions along the way. Valencia added another Foothill League Championship in the 2016–17 season.
Allatoona High School (2018–Present)
After relocating to Georgia, Coach Phillips was named the Head Boys’ Basketball Coach at Allatoona High School in 2018. In his time leading the Buccaneers, the program has continued to build a culture centered on discipline, accountability, communication, and team-first basketball.
Recent Program Success (Last Season)
